Applicants will be shortlisted for the Research Aptitude Test (RAT) on basis of them meeting the following considerations with regard to educational qualifications, work experience and research proposal:
Educational Qualifications: The minimum academic qualification for admission to the integrated M.Phil. & Direct Ph.D programmes is a Second Class Master’s or equivalent degree in the relevant subject awarded by a recognised university in India or abroad, with at least an average of 55 per cent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.5 under the seven-point scale of the University Grants Commission (UGC). In the case of SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled candidates, the minimum eligibility is an average of 50 per cent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.05.
Candidates who are likely to complete all the requirements of their final year Master’s Degree examinations by July 1, are also eligible to apply for M.Phil, provided they have successfully completed their first year Masters degree. In such cases, admission will be provisional. If a provisionally admitted student successfully completes the admission formalities such as clearing the Research Aptitude Test, but fails to score the minimum required mark/grade at the end of the final year examination of his/her Master’s degree, the offer of provisional admission will be automatically cancelled.
Work Experience: A minimum of five years of post graduation work experience is required for Direct PhD programmes. In case of the Integrated M.Phil-PhD Programme, there is no requirement of work experience. However, candidates with one to two years of work experience, will be preferred.
Submission of a research proposal is a compulsory requirement for admission to the Integrated M.Phil-Ph. D and Direct Ph.D. Programme. A research proposal consisting of approximately 1,000 words should accompany the proposal and indicate the Specification of the broad field of study, Statement of the research problem and scope and objectives of the study, rationale for and the significance of the study, methodology to be followed, references, and the candidate’s research/work experience in that area, if any.
Candidates who have an M.Phil or equivalent degree awarded by a recognized university in India or abroad are also eligible for a Direct PhD
Education (Regular mode):
Since 2012, the School of Education has been focusing on teaching, research and extension in several dimensions within Education as an area of academic inquiry as well as educational practice. The Centre for Education anchors the School's innovative Masters in Education (Elementary) programme. In the School of Education, the focus has been on engaging with issues and priorities emerging from global and local educational policy reforms and their impact on social equity and quality education for all, and towards strengthening social science perspectives in the area of education. Research by school faculty include curriculum and pedagogy studies, sociological studies of schooling, studies of teacher education, social exclusion, learning and assessment, and gender studies. These research studies engage with contemporary social and political processes underlying the relationship of education and development in the contemporary Indian context with a focus on equity and social justice.

Education (Practice based mode):
The Centre for Education Innovation and Action Research is an independent Centre pursuing research and field action/action research in the areas of Mathematics, Science and Language education, Education Technology, Teacher Professional Development, Curriculum and Pedagogic Studies and Education Policy and Design Based Research (www.ceiar.tiss.edu & clix.tiss.edu ). Faculty at the Centre have interest in research, theory building, policy engagement as well as field action in a range of disciplinary areas and have expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methods of research, use of multimedia, big data and digital tools. Faculty teach in the MA Education programme at Mumbai Campus and the Centre also offers the Post Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Education Perspectives and Research (for education professionals and faculty of teacher education institutions) and Reflective Teaching with ICT (for inservice teachers).
The Centre for Education Innovation and Action Research provides both a regular and practice based strand of research in Education.
Direct PhD: Post graduation with at least five years of relevant work experience. In Case of practice based PhD, to additionally possess adequate competencies to undertake work in the practice area chosen by the candidate. In the case of work involving video/audio/multimedia/web production, candidates would be expected to demonstrate their competence through the sharing of work portfolios.

In the 2018 admission to Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. and Direct Ph. D. in Education preference will be given to the Practice-based strand of research.
Distribution of Credit Hours:
The Direct Ph.D coursework is offered in the form of modular workshops spread across the first two semesters for scholars specializing in Social Sciences, Disaster Management, Habitat Studies, and Education. The coursework consists of four major subjects: Philosophical Foundations of Social Science Research, Social Theory and Research, Quantitative Research: Theory and Practice, Qualitative Research: Theory and Practice. After enrolment, scholars will be notified through an email on their official TISS email id regarding the schedule of the modular courses offered through the year. Scholars are required to attend coursework at the Mumbai Campus. If a scholar is unable to attend the course for some valid official or personal reason; it is the duty of the scholar to intimate the DSO regarding the absence, and get a prior approval stating the reason for absence. In certain cases, the scholar will be permitted to attend the missed modular courses offered at other campuses or in the forthcoming semesters. Scholars who have an M.Phil. degree in Social Sciences and allied disciplines maybe exempted from attending the modular coursework, but this has to be recommended by the guide after assessing the scholar’s preparedness to carry out independent research.

The full fees and deposits should be paid within the stipulated time after the announcement of the admission results. In addition, Rs. 50/- towards bank processing charges should be paid in any branch of the State Bank of India. If students fail to pay the fee on time, their candidature can be cancelled. Once the students details have been entered into the Online platform, a scanned copy of the fee receipt must be submitted via the online platform. Non-adherence to the above will be considered as equivalent to non-payment of fees.
