Introduction

The TISS has intensified its work in the North-Eastern States over the past 10 years, and after consultation with eight State Governments agreed to set up North Eastern Region campus in Guwahati in 2010. While it currently operates from an interim campus in Guwahati city. The Government of Assam has allotted land for the permanent campus within Assam Engineering College. The infrastructure development is being funded by the Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DONER), GoI.

Within the unique and complex realities of the North-East, TISS Guwahati aims to contribute systematically to the various development processes. The Guwahati campus has got a team of highly accomplished faculty engaged in teaching and research.

Vision

The Vision is to develop the TISS Guwahati Campus as a world class social sciences institution to create human resources and knowledge contributing to build just and peaceful societies across the North-Eastern States.

Mision

The Mission of TISS Guwahati Campus is to commit its resources to professional education and training of human service professionals, social science research, capacity building of local institutions, and collaboration with universities across the world, knowledge sharing through networking and linking of think tanks and offering consultancy services.

History

2006 The North Eastern Regional Centre was established at Guwahati. Apart from short term trainings on research, community mobilisation, gender, a diploma on community organization and development practice, which was designed to build capacities of grassroots development practitioners was introduced and three batches of over 100 students graduated successfully from this programme over the years.

2008 The Government of Assam invited the TISS to establish a campus in Assam. There was a regional consultation where committees with senior faculty members from TISS Mumbai visited all the states of northeast and TISS Campus in Guwahati was established.

Government of Assam awarded 24.5 acres of land to the TISS to build the campus;

  1. The foundation stone for the campus was laid by the Chief Minister of Assam Shri Tarun Gogoi and Mr. Krishna Kumar the then Chairperson of the Institute in the presence of Mr. Ratan Tata.

  2. UGC gave permission to set up the off campus of TISS in Guwahati.

  3. A landmark year for TISS Guwahati

  • Academic Programmes were launched in TISS Guwahati in a public function presided by Shri Ramadorai, Chairperson TISS Governing Board, the Chief Minister of Assam along with the Education Minister, DONER Minister and Union Minister for Rural Development.

  • Academic programmes started with two Masters Degree Programmes: (i) Ecology, Environment and Sustainable Development, and (ii) Social Work; and one Bachelors Degree Programme: Bachelors of Arts in Social Sciences

    1. A significant year for the campus

  • Government of India sanctioned Rs.100 crore in the Union Budget for infrastructure development.

  • Direct Ph.D. and integrated M.Phil.-Ph.D. programmes in Social Sciences were started.

  • A new M.A. Programme in Labour Studies and Social Security (renamed as M.A. in Labour Studies and Social Protection in 2014) was introduced.

  • Four specialisations were introduced within Social Work programme: Community Organization and Development Practice, Counselling, Livelihoods and Social Entrepreneurship, and Public Health.

  1. The campus introduced a new M.A. programme in Peace and Conflict Studies.

  2. A disciplinary M.A. programme in Sociology and Social Anthropology was also introduced.

  3. NAAC reaccredited TISS in February with a score of 3.89 out of 4 (in the third cycle), which is the second highest score of universities accredited so far.

Infrastructure :

 

TISS Guwahati Campus Library TISS library in Guwahati campus sprouted with an objective to provide appropriate knowledge resources to the academic community of the Institute. Keeping in mind, the information needs & interest of users, the library has been in the process of building print as well as electronic resources. As a result, the library collection include books pertaining to the areas of History, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Environment, Mathematics, Science, Language, Literature and Development. At present, the library has a good collection of text books and reference books (< 8500 in nos.), journals (print) of national & international importance, theses and dissertation, back volume of journals, theme – based collection of CDs/DVDs and magazines/newspapers. As electronic collections, the library has more than 10, 000 e – journals, 180 e – books in the field of Social Sciences and allied subjects. Access to e-resources is made available to users through IP based & Remote Login based facility (http://library.tiss.edu/eresources.html ). In addition, the campus has a computer centre with the facility of 65 computers and is available for students and research scholars to provide e-resources for academic study.

The library is fully computerized with KOHA, an integrated library management system; users can access the resources of the library through Online Public Access Catalogue (opac.tiss.edu) @ 24x7.

The Library has also created a Library Blog to keep users abreast with current development and publish Accession Update at monthly basis to keep users familiar with newly purchased books (http://www.tissglibrary.blogspt.com).

Computer Centre

   

 

Information & Technology Services

The campus has a computer centre with the facility of 65 computers and is available for students and research scholars to provide e-resources for academic study. In addition computer facilities are provided for the academic work in the hostels as well. These computers have priority for use by those who do not have their own laptops, PCs, etc. 

All students are allocated with an individual login and password for LDAP authentication, which will be needed for accessing email, accessing moodle (course management system). Wi-Fi is available in the hostels. Students who are using their own laptop get connected to the institute network through unique IDs to get access to the network.

  3. Girl’s Hostel (Shantipur) - 175

 

Campus Doctor - Campus doctor facility is available for students on designated days and timing in the campus. However in emergency students should approach the Institute Doctor for referral to the Institute’s networked hospitals.

 

Doctor’s availability in the Institute is as per the following schedule:

  1. Mondays – 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm

  2. Fridays – 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm

Geographical Mandate

  • Guwahati Campus will cover the following states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

  • While the main campus will be located in Guwahati, each of the other seven states will have a centre to undertake training, research and outreach programmes.

  • As per the agreement with the Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region (DONER), 66% of seats of seats reserved for students from eight North-East States

  • The TISS Guwahati Campus will collaborate with other universities and institutions in India and other countries to meet its objectives.

Specific Objectives of the Guwahati Campus

  • Teaching: Provide high quality professional education in the inter-disciplinary areas of Environmental, Habitat, Social, Health and Management Sciences at the undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral levels

  • Research: Create strong research capability in the region to generate cutting-edge knowledge in sustainable development, climate change, conflicts, peace and security, public health, public policy, governance and other areas of concern for the region

  • Capacity Building of Government and civil society personnel

  • Demonstrate innovative approaches to social entrepreneurship, sustainable development, skill development; disaster risk reduction, work with children, women, elderly and other groups and issues

  • Collaborate with universities, institutions and groups in the NER to strengthen and facilitate teaching, research, training and knowledge dissemination work

  • Facilitate debate on critical aspects of transformation in economy, society, culture, and environment through seminars, conferences, and roundtables, involving the State and non-State parties
